2009 Awards Banquet and 2010 Kickoff

Ben Petter, with only a couple of the trophies he was awarded.  In addition to being the WMRA Champion, Petter won the Kenny McLoughlin Award, the Gordon Reelie Award and the Hard Charger Award.

 

The team of Johnnie Blair and Dick Voss had a great season.  Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Driver and the Art Sparks Award were among their honors.

The whole Championship crew.  Ben's father, Terry (hiding behind the podium) was the WMRA Champion in 1985.  There were four former champions at the banquet.
Tom Glithero did a great job as the emcee!  Here he is with the very old Kenny McLoughlin trophy, awarded to the winner of the race closest to Memorial Day.

Maybe the highlight of the evening was Skeeter Flake as the ventriloquist and Evan Margeson as the dummy.  Evan sat on Skeet's lap but drew the line at the peck on the cheek.

Lap Checkers Ashley Ostman and Lynne Bennett (pictured) along with Kim Ostman were the deserving recipients of the Dave Smelser Award for Sportsmanship.

 

Ross Bentley, the featured speaker, did a great job entertaining and informing the crowd.  His message?  Have a good time and surround yourself with good people.

On February 6th the WMRA held their 2009 banquet and 2010 kickoff.  The day started with a social hour, followed by a great dinner catered by the Longhorn Barbeque.  After an update by President Tom Maples, Ross Bentley made a great speech.   

The next hour and a half or so was filled with Tom Glithero dispensing lots of humor and lots of well earned hardware.  Of course Champion Ben Petter took home plenty of awards with Johnnie Blair and the owner of his ride, Dick Voss gaining quite a few pounds of trophies and plaques.  All this would not have been possible without all our volunteers, trophy sponsors and door prize sponsors.  Please thank these people and support their businesses.  Click here to view the list.

It took many, many volunteers to make this banquet a success.  From organizing the food to selling the tickets to getting all the trophies made, there are many tasks to be done.  The WMRA is very grateful to each of these people for their efforts. 

• Dick Voss for securing a place for the banquet, finding a great caterer, being in charge of ticket sales, cleaning up afterwards and dozens of other tasks

• Ross Bentley for making such a great speech.  Ross agreed to come for a greatly reduced amount compared to his usual fee and then donating all of that back to the club after the banquet.  To thank Ross or to order to order any of his great books, go to his Speedsecrets website.

• Tom Glithero for his exceptional job doling out the awards and adding extra touches to help make this such a memorable banquet.

• Emma Livernash for her great job being the trophy girl for the evening

• Tom Margeson for his help getting the trophies and plaques ordered and organized

• Gayle Livernash, the WMRA Board, Deb Atkinson, Mary Jo Hinkle, and anyone we may have missed for helping with so many of the details.

With the new board getting a late start, the job of soliciting trophy sponsorships was never delegated.  In spite of that, many people and companies came forward and offered their support for the club.  We especially want to thank each of these sponsors very much for their support.
