McLoughlin Memorial Washington Midget Racing Association StateLine Speedway, Post Falls, ID, May 28, 2005, by John Hunter Rick Moss took advantage of a late race restart in route to capturing his second WMRA feature of the season. Moss, driving the Automobeal’s & More, T&A Auction, Beast/Pink Ford started outside front row due to a twelve car invert and trailed Brian Olson in the Ford Powertrain Ellis/Ford for the first twenty-nine laps but was able to get under Olson for the lead on lap thirty to win the Kenny McLoughlin Memorial by two car lengths. Matt Stone in the TRF Electric Beast/Gaerte was an impressive third, another car length back. Tony Seidelman was schedule to start on the pole along side Moss but lost his brakes on the warm-up lap, allowing Olson to start on the pole beside Moss. Olson was able to use the quicker low line to take the advantage over Moss through turns one and two with Stone, Spence Gatrell and Breanna Lopez rounding out the top five after the initial lap. The top five were virtually nose to tail for the next few laps with the real racing right behind with Stuart Birkenbine, Skeeter Flake, Rob Lindsey, Evan Margeson and Dallas Melby holding positions six through ten. On lap four Kenny Wood exited with mechanical problems followed one lap later by Nick Seidelman. Rookie driver, Tony Berry exited on lap six with rear brake problems. The lead trio of Olson, Moss and Stone began to pull away from Gatrell who had his hands full with Lopez and Birkenbine. Flake was having his best night of the season and was all over Birkenbine trying to take sixth. A little farther back, Lindsey, Spoor, Margeson and Melby were racing side by side. The top three continued to run single file and were increasing their margin over Gatrell. On lap thirteen, Melby took seventh from Flake, but on the next lap, Flake lost his brakes entering turn three. He tagged Melby with Birkenbine and Spoor taking evasive action. All were able to regain control and the yellow did not wave. Flake immediately exited with a broken master cylinder. Olson continued to hold a two car length advantage over Moss with Stone right on Moss’ rear bumper. On lap twenty-nine, Gatrell got loose in turn three and spun to bring out the caution. For the restart the order was Olson, Moss, Stone, Lopez, and Melby with Birkenbine, Spoor, Lindsey and Margeson sixth through ninth. As the green waved, Olson kept his advantage entering turn one but moved up just enough to allow Moss to get his nose under exiting turn two. Moss and Olson were side by side entering turn three, but the advantage was to Moss on the low side. Moss moved to a two car length advantage over Olson with Stone unable to make a charge from third. Gatrell was able to get past Margeson for ninth coming to the white flag. At the checkered, Moss held on to his two car length advantage to capture the Kenny McLoughin Memorial. The win increased his point lead going into the next race at Wenatchee on Saturday night, July 9. The night got off to a fast start with two of this years rookies qualifying in the top four. Melby, in only his third midget start, set quick time at 12.760 with Margeson registering fourth quick time. With the addition of SpeedMart as a sponsor of the dashes, the fans were entertained with two excellent races. Spoor was able to hold off T. Seidelman by a scant car length in winning the B Dash. The A. Dash saw the front row of Flake and Lindsey battle side by side for three laps before Flake edged ahead to take his first career A Dash victory. Kevin Wood captured the first heat over Spoor by a car length. On lap two of the first heat, Bobby Bird, N. Seidelman and Berry got together with Bird experiencing severe front damage, ending his night. Midway through the heat, Kenny Wood slowed rapidly down the front straight with Spoor climbing his right rear but fortunately was able to continue. In the second heat, Ken Ferris was not as lucky. Entering turn one on lap two, Ferris rode over the right rear of Lopez and sailed off the end of the track, seriously damaging the front on his Beast. Moss was able to hold off Olson for the win. In the fast heat, Gatrell was able to get around Birkenbine on lap four to take the checkered ahead of Margeson and Flake.
