for Moss Washington Midget Racing Association Wenatchee Valley Super Oval, Wenatchee, WA., June 11 by John Hunter Rick Moss showed his championship form with an impressive victory from his tenth place starting position on the fast quarter-mile Wenatchee Valley Super Oval. Moss took the lead after a lap twenty- three restart and drove the HVB Racing, Ed Pink Racing Engines Beast-Pink Ford to a three car length victory over Evan Margeson in the thirty lap Marysville Transmission and Brake feature. Margeson in the Landon Motorsports, Simpson Race Products, HVB Racing Beast-Gaerte led the first twenty-three laps. Spence Gatrell finished a close third in the Ridgecrest Homes, Profab Hawk-Gaerte. Margeson paced the field for the scheduled thirty-five lap feature with Ben Petter starting on the outside. As the green waved, Margeson took the advantage through the first and second turn over Petter with Gatrell, Dallas Melby and Doug Kammerzel rounding out the top five after the initial lap. Moss was using the high line as he methodically moved up from his outside fifth row starting position. After the first lap he disposed of Steve Spoor and a lap later went around Skeeter Flake exiting turn two. Also on lap two, Gatrell made an outside pass of Petter for second and began his bid for the top position. On lap three Moss dove under Kammerzel for fifth entering turn three. The top four were racing nose to tail as Moss was taking care of business. On lap four, fast qualifier, Scott Walker passed Spoor for eight as Moss was taking fourth from Melby while exiting turn four. On lap five, Bobby Bird brought out the first yellow when he spun harmlessly in turn four. For the restart the running order was Margeson, Gatrell, Petter, Moss and Melby with Kammerzel, Flake, Walker, Spoor and Rob Lindsey rounding out the top ten. On the following lap, Tony Carabello spun in turn two bringing out the yellow. On the restart, Moss was all over Petter and was able to make the pass on lap eight. The following lap, Moss disposed of Gatrell as the pair entered turn three. By lap twelve, Moss was right on Margeson’s tail looking for an opening. The hardest fought battle on the track was in the middle of the pack as Brian Olson was trying to work his way up from his sixteenth starting position but was making little progress. The problem was that there were no less than eight cars running side by side and nose to tail with several positions changing each lap. By lap sixteen, Olson had moved into the top ten ahead of Lindsey, Tony Seidelman, Ken Ferris and Breanna Lopez. Moss was looking both high and low for an opening as the top three raced nose to tail. Walker passed Melby for sixth on lap sixteen. On lap twenty, Kenny Wood spun in turn two bringing out the yellow. Under the yellow, both Wood and Olson called it a night. On the restart, Carabello stalled at the pit entrance bringing out yet another caution and ending his evening. The restart order was Margeson, Moss, Gatrell, Petter, and Kammerzel with Walker, Melby, Flake, Matt Stone and Spoor in the top ten. Margeson led the field down to a slow restart and was able to hold his advantage over Moss entering the first turn. Entering turn three, Kammerzel experienced mechanical problems and exited the track. One lap later, as the field exited turn four, Flake and Stone made contact with Stone spinning down the front straight and stopping in turn one. Damage from the contact with Flake made it impossible to return. Walker exited under the yellow with a broken rear brake rotor. On the restart, Margeson played into the veteran’s hands allowing Moss to get under him entering the first turn and making the pass entering turn three. One lap later, Petter spun in turn three causing several cars to scatter. Spoor got on his brakes to avoid Petter leaving Ferris nowhere to go but over his left rear. Fortunately, both were able to continue without stopping to regain their position for the restart. On lap twenty-six, Spoor spun exiting turn two with Lopez bringing out the seventh caution of the race. The restart order was Moss, Margeson, Gatrell, Melby and Flake with T. Seidelman, Lindsey, Nick Seidelman and Ferris rounding out the top ten. When the green waved for the final time, Moss jumped to a three car length advantage over Margeson and Gatrell and was able to hold on to that lead when the checkered fell five laps early, on lap thirty, due to a track curfew. The evening got off to fast start with Walker recording fast time at 12.546, with fifteen of the twenty-six drivers breaking the thirteen second barrier. Brian Olson led flag to flag in winning the SpeedMart B Dash over Lopez with Moss taking the SpeedMart A Dash cash from his outside front row starting position ahead of Ferris. N. Seidelman dominated the first heat leading wire to wire over Ken Muth and Bird. Rookies Carabello and Mark Torrez spun entering turn one on lap three when Bob Eldridge slowed down the front straight with engine problems. Olson captured the second heat over Lopez and Chris Schmelze in the caution free event. Melby won the fast heat over Moss by a car length as the latter pleased the crowd from his sixth starting position. With a full field of cars, a B. Main was needed for the first time in several years. Bird led wire to wire over Muth. The event was marred by hard crash when John Wood tried to knock down the turn two concrete. A weld appeared to break, which supports the right front shock mounts to the frame, on his new chassis. The car was a total but fortunately the veteran driver was uninjured. Alan Norton brought out the last yellow of the B when his throttle stuck entering turn three. He was fortunate not to cause too much damage with the wall contact. The next race for the Washington Midget Racing Association is next Saturday night, June 18 on the fast Yakima Speedway half-mile oval.
